Small Kitchen Makeovers

Redesigning your kitchen is not something you do fairly often. This kitchen begins with a more conventional basis (pale blue walls and island, dark wood ceiling beams) after which welcomes extra surprising touches like a chandelier, stainless-steel refrigerator, and floating shelves. The Palecek rattan pendant on this kitchen feels “outdated-college Florida,” designer Andrew Howard notes; the appliances are from Viking, the Lee Industries stools are in fabrics by Perennials and Link Outdoor and the window shades are in a Peter Dunham Textiles linen.

On this kitchen design, we added a sideboard to supply storage and a serving surface. The kitchen’s settee is by Richard Wrightman, the sink fittings are by Newport Brass, the ceiling lights are by Restoration Hardware , the countertops are marble, and the custom dhurrie is by Robshaw. The picket grills of the kitchen cabinets have been taken from an old photograph of a 1920s yacht.

“I wanted the kitchen to “go away” — which, it turns out, is an unpopular notion,” designer Michelle Prentice says of her understated cooking area “When we’re seated on the dining desk, the kitchen recedes; it appears like we’re in a totally different room.” The Danish eating table is surrounded by Jacob Kjaer chairs in Bretano’s Royalsuede and classic French armchairs in Lee Jofa’s Tahira Ottoman fabric.
